Mount Baker Highway

Family Drive and Explore!

We decided to take a drive up to the highest point on the Mount Baker Highway today.  The road itself switchbacks up the hills just like a trail, until you see the top of Mount Baker at a large parking lot with bathrooms. Artist Point is amazing and a hiker can spot trails on all of surrounding hills.

There was some snow just off of the parking area at Artist Point and we stomped through it a bit, building small snowmen because thats what every kid wants to do. We followed a trail for an eighth of a mile to a great viewpoint of Mount Baker, Mount Shuksan and the parking lot!

Coasting back down towards Heather Meadows, we stopped to check out an ADA approved trail; Fire and Ice. This trail doesn't give any glimpses of Baker or Shuksan, but has amazing territorial views. There are a few lakes and a small creek to wet your face in (video here). My wife and I could not stop talking about the amazing beauty along this trail.

Everyone was now wet, but I really wanted to check off the other ADA hike that circles Picture Lake. The lake and Mount Shuksan are the main event on this trail. It is worth a stop to check out the picturesque reflections. We decided to plan more trips on the way back down the highway!

Here are a couple videos we took on the Fire and Ice Trail!
