I took Raichel, my seven year old daughter, on this blast from the past hike, Iron Goat Trail. I have read the book "The White Cascades" so I was excited to see this historic old railroad trail. We picked the trailhead near Martin Creek to investigate.
The trailhead has a nice toilet facility and two handicapped parking spots. There is a large information board at the start with some history and trail information. We took off on the old railroad to see how far we could get in a short time.
We were so surprised to see no other people on this hike and an empty parking lot. The trail stays very level through a forested hillside with a couple of trail junctions leading to the upper route and offering more hiking options with the Wellington Trail and Windy Point.
The ADA portion of this hike is three miles stretching between two trailheads. We will get back up here and check out the other side soon!
Imagining there had been no highway below and no towns nearby, it brought a sense of reality to the tragedy described in "The White Cascades". Steep hillsides and stuck in the snow, this would have felt like the middle of nowhere!
Get out into nature and be somewhat alone on this side of the Iron Goat Trail. Really a perfect trail to experience nature, without the crowds of others. Perfect spot for families and ADA approved!
