PCTA Campout
I attended a campout this past weekend in Concrete, WA where the Pacific Crest Trail was the main topic. The group that oversees most of the trail through Washington is the North 350 Blades! Bill Hawley, newly appointed coordinator for the Washington section of the PCTA, planned the weekend out and brought a bunch of hikers together.
It is very easy to attend any function or work party that the PCTA puts on. This one was a kickoff to the summer event. It included a hike down to the Rockport Pub along the old railroad bed and Skagit River.
Right now they have a lot more work to get done on the trail, then they have people to volunteer and get that work done. One way they have received more people, is getting them excited about the steward program.
The steward program was implemented last year in Washington and has been growing ever since. For example, I saw two people adopt a section of the trail over this past weekend alone. Once you adopt a section of the trail, you are committing to be the eyes for the PCTA on that section. You can also coordinate trail work parties on your section. Most sections that have been adopted so far are close to a road or major highway.
