WSDOT: Where is the Construction This Summer? How is the Sharpe's Corner Roundabout?
Andrea Petrich with Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is our guest this episode.
We start out talking about the success of the new roundabout at Sharpe's Corner. Andrea points out that traffic is moving very smoothly through this intersection now at peak times. She also points out that the roundabout has limited the points of possible conflicts from 32 to 8, with the 8 being more sideswipe style at lower speeds.
There are some spots on Highway 9 where there will be some roadwork this summer. Pedestrian improvement work and paving at Highway 9 and Highway 20. There is a roundabout being constructed at Highway 9 and Francis/Old Day Creek Road. Just North of Big Lake there is a fish passage project that will close the highway for 5 days. Also 10 miles of Highway 9 will be resurfaced between Sedro Woolley and Big Lake; This is daytime work and will cause lane closures and backups.
Highway 20 spur from Sharpe's Corner to Anacortes is being resurfaced in both directions so lanes will be shut down during this project.
I-5 will have some lane closures heading south from Skagit County as WSDOT finishes a project of updating the barriers in both directions. This is a part of the plan to update median cable barrier from 3 strand to 4 strand to better prevent crossover accidents.
North Cascades Highway and Highway 2 will both be construction free this summer! Enjoy either route for your travels.
Washington State Ferries are running at top performance as usual. Andrea did mention that last year there were a few vessels that were taken down because of crab pots which were placed in ferry routes. Reservations are recommended where possible.
